The Houston Texan's quarterback competition is over and Brian Hoyer has been named the starter. Hoyer was undrafted and signed with the New England Patriots in 2009.
Hoyer was signed as a backup and not much else as Tom Brady still leads New England's aerial attack.
Hoyer was released by the Patriots in 2012 during final cuts and ended up landing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was only there for a short period of time before he was released. Hoyer had a similar stint with the Arizona Cardinals before signing with the Cleveland Browns.
He started for the Cleveland Browns but after several bad games in 2014 he was benched for Johnny Manziel. So far the Texans have had two average looking quarterbacks competing for a starting spot in Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer. Throughout preseason Hoyer has looked like the more dependable option and the one that will put up more points.
This led to Bill O'Brien's decision to start him over Mallett. The Texans desperately need a stable quarterback who can score points and deliver the ball to their primary weapon DeAndre Hopkins. With a starter named, this should bring some stability to the offense and can finally allow one of these quarterbacks to build some chemistry with the first team wide receivers.
