Dee Milliner's future with the New York Jets is unknown. In two years the cornerback has done nothing but get labeled a bust as he struggled with rookie mistakes and then injuries. This year appears to be no different as the former first-round draft pick is out with a wrist injury and will not return for the first few games of the season. The Jets began making moves to get past Milliner by adding Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie into the mix as many wonder if the third-year pro could be a trade target this year.
The Jets did not hesitate to say Milliner was competing for a spot on the roster. However, a training camp wrist injury derailed any progress being made. While the Jets remained in Milliner's corner following the injury, there is definite speculation that he could be on the move sooner rather than later. With the first round of roster cuts about to happen, Milliner could find himself either released or traded in the upcoming few weeks.
According to NJ.com, the likely outcome for Milliner is getting put on short-term injured reserve. This gives the Jets flexibility and would allow them to keep the cornerback while also retaining Milliner. Outside of Revis and Cromartie, Buster Skrine is making an solid impression while Dexter McDougle and Javier Arenas are working hard as well. Although, what would happen if a team showed interest in a trade for Milliner?
Erik Lambert of NFLMocks.com makes the case of trading Milliner to the Dallas Cowboys who are getting depleted by injuries in the secondary. Dallas has lost Orlando Scandrick for the season. Brandon Carr is coming back from injury. Morris Claiborne has seen his struggles. Byron Jones is a rookie. There is a case to add Milliner and give Dallas some more depth to work with. ESPN's John Clayton recognizes that the loss of Scandrick could be huge for the Cowboys. They invested heavily in the pass rush with players like Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory, but need to beef up the secondary options. While Milliner does not necessarily fit that definition, he would be solid depth and a change of scenery could do him some good.
Meanwhile the Jets are waiting to hear about a suspension to Sheldon Richardson who is expected to miss at least four games. With the rise of Muhammad Wilkerson and Leonard Williams, losing Richardson is not terrible, but not welcomed. The defensive end is hopeful a ruling comes soon.
"When I get the day of when I can actually return, then I can move forward," Richardson said, via The Post. "But until then, it's going to be a cloud over my head."
