Chicago Cubs Trade Rumors: Fernando Rodney Acquired From Seattle Mariners for Cash or Player To Be Named

Aug 28, 2015 08:40 AM EDT

The Chicago Cubs have acquired Fernando Rodney from the Seattle Mariners after the reliever was designated for assignment over the weekend and he comes over from the M's for cash considerations or a player to be named later.

The Mariners have been frustrated with Rodney this season, as he has mostly been a mess after leading the majors in saves last year with 48. Patrick Mooney of CSNChicago.com reports that Rodney should be in the bullpen for the Cubs for the Dodgers series coming up. Rodney has a connection to the Cubs with his former manager Joe Maddon from Tampa Bay.

Rodney has always been a bit erratic, but he took it to a new level this year with six blown saves and a 5.68 ERA for the Mariners. Rodney likely will pitch out of the bullpen but will not be in a closer role after the way he faltered in Seattle after a season and a half.
