The Dallas Cowboys went from having a leading rusher in DeMarco Murray to now stressing their faith in a committee of backs for the 2015 season. Murray departed for the Philadelphia Eagles and now the Cowboys are left with backup Joseph Randle, former third-stringer Lance Dunbar and potential starter Darren McFadden. So far the run game for the Cowboys has been forgettable thanks to injuries, but Jerry Jones believes that will chance.
Jones has kept his faith in the run game even when all three rushers were out with injuries and undrafted free agent Gus Johnson was getting the start. The third preseason game showed positive signs in the run game. McFadden looked good with four carries for 37 yards while Randle had six carries for 15 yards. It was not as impressive as what Murray does, but it added up to positive gains. According to Jones, fans can expected to see a rotation rather than a clear No.1 guy in the run game.
"I see how we can line up certainly this coming week but I see how we can line up against the Giants, yes, I do," Jones said, via ESPNDallas.com. "You say, 'Well, couldn't you see it before?' Now, I saw the same things before. I expect [Randle] to give us and has the talent to make some of the plays we saw him make tonight. I certainly know [McFadden] can make them and [Lance] Dunbar can do the same. If they're healthy, I'll take their skill and what they can bring and go to the game against the Giants and won't ask for any more."
Fantasy owners would be wise to not invest in the run game of the Cowboys, but instead look at what the wide receiver rotation brings to the field. While Dez Bryant is the top man for Tony Romo, his injury has opened the door for others to excel. Bryant has yet to play a preseason game as the Cowboys remain cautious with his hamstring strain. With the receiver out, players like Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley have been improving their chemistry with Romo this preseason and should be considered for a second WR spot on a fantasy roster. It is unclear if this hamstring problem with Bryant will continue to be an issue. If it is, both Williams and Beasley will be players to invest in.
