NY Mets Rumors: Noah Syndergaard Skips Start For Steven Matz, Addison Reed Trade Helps Bullpen Depth, Terry Collins Likes NL East Chances

The Mets are keeping a close eye on their young arms and they will skip the next start for Noah Syndergaard and will activate Steven Matz to pitch Saturday against the Miami Marlins to set a six-man rotation.

According to ESPN New York, the Mets are trying to limit the innings for their young pitchers heading into the playoffs. Down the stretch the team is going to use a six-man rotation and it comes with Matz returning from an injury and has not pitched since July. The NY Mets are one of the contenders in the National League this year and GM Sandy Alderson has said that he will not make a decision on the status of manager Terry Collins until after the season and this comes as the team has acquired Addison Reed to help bolster the bullpen with some depth.

The Mets are currently leading the National League East and if the team somehow misses the playoffs, Collins could be on the chopping block. The Mets have had some collapses before, but with how the Nationals have played this season it will take some poor play for New York to miss out. According to Hardball Talk, Sandy Alderson said that the team "will wait until after the season to address Terry Collins' contract situation."

Collins has been with the team for five seasons and he has a sub-.500 overall record during that time, but now the Mets are a contender and will finish with a winning record. Collins has managed to deal with the media, young pitching and expectations for this season and some have suggested he could be a favorite for Manager of the Year. The Mets are trying to hold on for the playoffs and if they make it, it's very unlikely that Collins will be fired.

The Mets were an active team at the trade deadline after adding Tyler Clippard, Kelly Johnson, Juan Uribe and Yoenis Cespedes and they have added another player before the waiver deadline in Addison Reed. According to ESPN New York, Reed was acquired for two minor league players in a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Reed comes in after starting the season as the closer in Arizona, but that did not work out and he was one of the players mentioned as available heading into the trade deadline. The Mets bullpen has been solid on the back end, but the seventh inning situation has been an issue at times and having some more depth could help a great deal. Reed comes in on a $4.875 million deal this season and he has arbitration next year, but the Mets are clearly in win-now mode.
