Byron Jones has had experience playing duel positions so it makes sense that the Cowboys want to make him a safety in certain defensive packages.
Jones has been experimenting with this all off season and has been picking up the defensive playbook extremely fast. So far the Cowboys have been content at moving Jones around in order to get him experienced playing both positions. Jones in preseason has spent a large portion of time covering tight ends in the middle of the field.
Byron Jones recently discussed the difficulties with being a versatile defensive back. Jones stated
"It's tough to fine-tune the small details, some of the greats were either corners who played a lot of corner but moved to safety but not necessarily playing both at the same time. I'm still young. I'm still learning. Maybe I can mold into a safety or to a corner. Maybe they're just trying to see where I fit best. At corner, you really have to rely on your technique, when you're tried; I think that's the toughest part. The small technique stuff as opposed to safety where you've got to really turn on your brain and play with your brain because there's a lot of checks you've got to get in and out of because the defense is relying on you more."
The Cowboys expect a lot out of the first round pick this upcoming season.
