Tom Brady is back meaning the New England Patriots can operate their offense as normal. There is only one issue, injuries. Several of the team's playmakers have been out for a good portion of the preseason and a few remain doubtful for the season opener. Heading into Week 1, Julian Edelman is questionable, Brandon LaFell is questionable, LeGarrette Blount is suspended and Brandon Gibson was lost for the season. However, one player is emerging as a potential good threat as Reggie Wayne made his New England debut Thursday.
Wayne returned to the field for the first time following injuries last season with the Indianapolis Colts that eventually led to his release from the team. The veteran sat on the market for a long time before injuries piled up and the Patriots signed him to a small contract. While the final preseason game was designed for players fighting the roster bubble, Wayne used it as a time to get in needed game reps and he looked strong doing it. The receiver only played a handful of minutes before recorded a nice 18-yard catch followed by another six-yard gain. He looked against the Giants and could see much more playing time than expected.
With injuries piling up, the Patriots need Wayne. Head coach Bill Belichick would not confirm what kind of role Wayne would play for the team, but it is clear he is needed and with a sure-fire arm like Brady throwing him passes, the veteran could rack up a nice season. Adding him onto the bench might not be the worst idea for a fantasy football owner.
Right now, the healthiest receiver for the Patriots is Danny Amendola. Both Edelman and LaFell are doubtful. With roster moves coming, the Patriots could try and add a player or two to help with depth. A familiar face in Kenbrell Thompkins is available. He has chemistry with Brady and knows the playbook. The same can be said for Brandon Lloyd who is also available. Both players could step in and make an immediate impact for the Patriots should they feel they need it.
New England is simply just thrilled to have Brady back under center. Rob Gronkowski took to Twitter to say, "Let's go! This season to be one heck of another ride!!" That was accompanied by a photo of the tight end and Brady celebrating. Blount also posted his excitement on social media. Getting Brady back under center makes the Patriots contenders regardless of who he has to throw to on the sidelines.
