Denver Broncos Rumors: Montee Ball Released, Dallas Cowboys Option? CJ Anderson Fantasy Starter Over Ronnie Hillman For Peyton Manning

Sep 04, 2015 05:31 PM EDT

The Denver Broncos may be shopping a Montee Ball trade ahead of roster cuts and reports have the Dallas Cowboys as a potential landing spot, as they would like more depth on the roster at running back. The Broncos have CJ Anderson and Ronnie Hillman as the main starters for Peyton Manning and it comes as Ball has been a disappointment.

According to Pro Football Talk, multiple reports from local Denver outlets have the Cowboys and Broncos talking about a deal for Ball. 104.3 The Fan and Mile High Sports 1430 AM both have reported that the two teams "have discussed" a trade for Ball that would bring him to the Cowboys. The Cowboys reportedly want to pick up another running back behind Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden after roster cuts happen.

UPDATE: The Broncos have waived Ball.

Ball has dealt with injuries and inconsistency with Denver and this would be a big fall for the 2013 second round pick. Many though Ball had starter talent, but he has not been able to put that together yet. Ball looked okay in the last preseason game for the Broncos, but he was not productive, going for just 27 yards on 16 carries. NFL.com reports that there are no talks going on between the teams, but even if that is the case, the sides could look at a deal later on.

The Cowboys have been consistent about replacing DeMarco Murray with Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar, but now they could look at making an addition. Ball was one the best college RBs ever and he may not have much of a future in Denver anymore. CJ Anderson is the starter now and he comes in after having a great second half to the season and he is now the number one guy in Denver.

Ronnie Hillman has been making a push lately and the Denver Post reported that Hillman is in line to be the second running back behind Anderson. After a bad year for Ball, it looks like the team does not have much confidence in the running back and he could be fourth behind Juwan Thompson if things keep him in Denver. The Cowboys wouldn't be the worst fit, as Ball could be a depth option as long as the team doesn't have to give up anything too valuable.

Ball had only 172 yards rushing last season and he dealt with injuries, while Anderson stepped up and had over 500 rushing yards in the final six games of the year. Anderson is more athletic and the team is looking at Hillman as a better backup option for the depth chart. Anderson had over 800 yards last season and he also averaged over four yards per carry.
