The LA Lakers could consider signing Metta World Peace to a free agent deal to add some veteran experience for Kobe Bryant and this comes as Los Angeles has signed Marcelo Huertas to help with depth for D'Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson at point guard.
The Lakers have made some significant moves this offseason with the additions of Roy Hibbert, Lou Williams and Brandon Bass and now they could add a former player in Peace. According to Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports, the Lakers are "seriously considering" signing Peace to a deal and while a contract is not close, it could happen as camp gets closer. The Lakers have also added Huertas, as Wojnarowski reported last week that the Euroleague guard has signed a contract.
Peace comes in after playing in Italy last season and he previously was hit with the amnesty clause a few years ago for the Lakers. Woj writes that Peace has been working out with Lakers layers at the team facility this summer and that could be part of the reason why the team is interested. At this point Peace could be a low risk, high upside option if he comes into camp with the team and he could fit on the bench as a defensive specialist, something the team lacked last season.
The Lakers have Michael Frazier and Jonathan Holmes as options coming into camp and Robert Upshaw also could potentially be in that mix. The last time Peace played in the league he was with the Knicks during the 2013-14 season and he averaged 4.8 points and two rebounds in 13.4 minutes per contest. Peace would be more about depth than production this time around and he also could help mentor some of the younger players like Russell, Clarkson and Julius Randle. Wojnarowski writes that there are "varying degrees of interest" regarding Peace, but that the team has had discussions.
The Lakers have continued to make moves, as the team has signed Marcelo Huertas out of the Euroleague to a deal. Adrian Wojnarowski first reported on the deal and he is coming in on a one-year contract. Wojnarowski writes that Huertas is "one of the Euroleague's most accomplished playmakers" and he is a solid "pick-and-roll guard" that could fit in well with the team. The Lakers have wanted to add some veteran experience behind Russell and Clarkson and now they could have a solid fit with Huertas. Huertas is not guaranteed to make the roster, but he had a good chance to be there.
Jordan Clarkson has been in the news lately regarding the Philippines National Team, as the team wants him to play for the club, as his mother is from the Philippines. According to Lakers.com, Clarkson will not play with the team in the FIBA Asia Championship this year. Lakers camp starts in less than one month.
