Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in the men's final at the US Open on Sunday to take the major tennis title for his third Grand Slam win of the season.
Djokovic outlasted Federer 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to win the major and he won the US Open title for the first time since 2011. Djokovic has won three major titles this year with the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open and he lost against Stan Wawrinka at the French Open. Federer had played very well leading into the final, but he could not take advantage of some opportunities against Djokovic and lost the match.
The matchup in the final was number one against number two and Djokovic will remain in his position with the victory over Federer. Djokovic won the first set on his serve and Federer was able to come back and win the second set, but he was unable to get things going the rest of the way. The two players may have been a little off after a lengthy rain delay and Federer finished the match with more unforced errors compared to Djokovic.
The two players have played multiple times in Grand Slam finals and this year they have played five times. Djokovic has won three of those matches and one of those wins included the final at Wimbledon. Djokovic has now won 10 Grand Slam singles titles and now the series between these two players is tied 21-21.
