Oakland Raiders Rumors: Matt McGloin Starts After Derek Carr Injury? Taylor Mays Signs After Charles Woodson, Nate Allen Injuries

The Oakland Raiders saw Derek Carr suffer a hand injury on Sunday, but initial reports have the injury not serious and that could push Matt McGloin into the starting job until Carr can return. The Raiders have also signed Taylor Mays after dealing with injuries to Charles Woodson and Nate Allen in the secondary.

The Raiders were dominated on Sunday against the Bengals and the team lost Carr to an injury that looked like it could be serious. According to NFL.com, an MRI showed that Carr has a bruised thumb and has suffered no ligament damage or other serious issues in his hand. The report says that while the Raiders "reached out" to Christian Ponder after the injury, right now they do not see a need to add another quarterback.

NFL.com reports that Carr will be evaluated during the week and the team will make a decision on his status at that time. The team clearly is encouraged by the MRI results, or they likely would add Ponder or someone else. Ponder was let go before the season started and Matt McGloin came in for Carr in the game against the Bengals. McGloin likely will start if Carr can't go on Sunday and the Raiders may think that Carr is healthy enough to serve as the backup for Week 2 against the Ravens.

Carr went 7-of-12 for 61 yards before leaving the game against the Bengals and McGloin came in and threw for 142 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. Ponder was with the Raiders in the preseason, going 22-of-35 for 245 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The Raiders did not have much to cheer about on Monday after the Bengals game, but Latavius Murray looked good in his first game as starter, rushing for 44 yards and adding seven catches for 36 yards out of the backfield.

The Raiders are getting a bit thin in the secondary and they reportedly have added Taylor Mays to help out. According to ESPN.com, Adam Schefter reports that Mays has signed with the Raiders after injuries to Nate Allen and Charles Woodson. Woodson is dealing with a shoulder injury and Allen may have suffered a serious injury to his knee against the Bengals. Mays was previously with the team before getting cut and now he is back. Mays reportedly "considered" signing with the Seahawks.

NFL.com reports that the "swelling" in Carr's thumb will be the determining factor if he plays or not on Sunday. If Carr cans make it through as the backup for McGloin, he could be a full go in Week 3 and that would allow the Raiders to avoid adding another quarterback. The team has high hopes for this season with Amari Cooper coming in and they hope Carr is back soon. The team also added Aldon Smith heading into Week 1 and he got the chance to play against the Bengals and likely will see more snaps this week.
