Atletico Madrid continued their incredible unbeaten run in Europe, while Liverpool, Inter Milan and Newcastle United picked up impressive winners.
Athletic Bilbao, however, suffered a defeat at the hands of Lyon with Tottenham Hotspur being held by NK Maribor.
Atletico took control of Group B after Diego Costa and Emre Berizoglu scored in a 2-1 win over Academica - the win taking their unbeaten run to an impressive 16 games.
At Anfield, Stewart Downing, the man who did not have a single assist or a goal last season, scored the winner for Liverpool against Russian big-spenders Anzhi Makhachkala in a 1-0 win. Newcastle had Gabriel Obertan to thank for taking home all three points at St James' Park - the midfielder striking in the 48th minute to score the only goal of the game against Club Brugge.
Rodrigo Palacio headed home a late goal to give Inter a vital 1-0 victory over Partizan Belgrade, while Gylfi Sigurdsson had to rescue Spurs from an embarrassing defeat against Maribor in Group J.
Robert Beric had given the home side the lead three minutes from half-time, before the Icelandic international struck for Spurs just before the hour mark to ensure a share of the spoils.
In the other Group J match, Jose Toche salvaged a draw for Panathinaikos with a last-minute equalizer against Lazio to keep the group interesting with all four teams equally capable of qualifying for the next round.
Lyon also maintained their 100 percent record in Group I with a 2-1 win over last year's runners-up Bilbao. Lisandro Lopez opened the scoring for the French side, usually used to playing in the Champions League rather than the poorer cousin, before Ibai Gomez equalized. Jimmy Briand, however, sealed victory for Lyon four minutes from time with a timely goal.
