New Orleans Saints Rumors: CJ Spiller Return Helps Mark Ingram, Khiry Robinson as Drew Brees Pushes Brandin Cooks, Brandon Coleman After Joseph Morgan Injury

The New Orleans Saints tried to add offensive firepower to the roster in the offseason by signing CJ Spiller, but the running back has yet to be seen on the field. After undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery back in August, the running back returned to practice on a limited basis, but his status for Week 2 is unknown. With Mark Ingram thriving as the leading rusher, what will Spiller's role be going forward?

The Saints took the loss in Week 1 and will now look to rebound against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their home opener. According to head coach Sean Payton via Mike Triplett of ESPN.com, it is unclear if Spiller will be active or not for the matchup as he continues to work back in following the knee issue. Payton stressed that Spiller needs time to get up to speed with the offense after missing time in training camp. Quarterback Drew Brees is anxious for Spiller to return as it was clear the Saints are lacking playmakers to work with.

"He's a pro. And just the time we spent on the field today, I like the way he looks. I like the look in his eye," Brees said, via ESPN.com. "Even though we had minimal time in training camp, I feel like I know the player. I know the athlete. I know what he can do for us. And I think as we kind of build in nuances for him throughout the season, we'll have a chance to be able to work on those things and build the comfort level."

The Saints want to continue to be a pass-heavy team which was clear in the Week 1 loss as Ingram put up eight catches for 98 yards. That paired with the 24 yards he had off nine carries on the ground. Khiry Robinson also worked in as both a rusher and receiver. Spiller is likely to do the same thing as his speed will make him a big piece of the offense. Fantasy owners would be wise to keep Ingram on for now as Spiller's workload will be light upon his return.

Brees is confident in the offense despite the loss. Brandin Cooks worked well as one of the top receivers, but only managed 49 yards. Brandon Coleman hauled in a touchdown catch in his first game in the NFL as the rookie could develop into something strong. Brees believes Joseph Morgan will be back on the field following an injury which will help the whole offense move better against the Buccaneers.

"That's not even an option," Brees said, via ESPN.com when asked about starting 0-2. "I mean, we've got to find a way to win."
