With Romo out from anywhere from 4-12 games the Cowboys need someone they can rely on not to turn the ball over. The Cowboys defense has been capable dominating the line of scrimmage and scoring off takeaways so really all Dallas is looking for is a game manager.
Kellen Moore (Dallas Cowboys Practice Squad): Moore was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012 by the Detroit Lions. Moore was one of the final cuts of the Lions 2015 training camp. Moore has never had any regular season NFL action so it will be interesting to see if he can make an impact on the Cowboys coaching staff.
Jameill Showers (Dallas Cowboys: Practice Squad): Showers was impressive in preseason. He routinely got out of trouble and ran for some big gains. Showers however is not perfect and his strength comes from his ability to be a mobile quarterback. Showers can throw the deep ball and is seemingly electric when he is on the field, the main question with him is, can he run the offense? In his first year probably not but he will be one of the first guys up if the Cowboys replacement quarterback gets injured.
Brandon Weeden (Dallas Cowboys): Everyone hates on Brandon Weeden, including me, but he looked pretty great to put away the Eagles on Sunday. Weeden went 7/7 on his first action of 2015 ending his drive with a deep touchdown to Terrance Williams. Weeden might be the best backup the Cowboys could have hoped for or he can be an anemic cyst on the soul of this offense, hopefully he learned from last year's disaster in Arizona.
Zach Mettenberger (Tennessee Titans): The Cowboys would have to trade for Mettenberger which could be a problem considering how much Tennessee claims they want to hold onto him. Mettenberger played lights out in preseason and looked to be competing for the starting job. Now with Mariota proven somewhat as a reliable quarterback could the Titans be willing to deal?
Christian Ponder (Free Agent): Ponder is a free agent, and is a former 1st round draft pick. The Cowboys have been absolutely astounding at signing some seemingly washed up first round selections and turning them into great productive players. He could be worth a look as the Cowboys are running out of options.
