NFL Week 3 Preview: Which Backup Quarterbacks Have the Best Chance to Succeed? Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears

Sep 25, 2015 10:48 PM EDT

Luke McCown (New Orleans Saints)

Matchup: At Carolina Panthers

McCown enters this week 3 matchup with a mediocre offensive line, shaky defense, and an 0-2 record. With Brees out with a bruised rotator cuff McCown will have to make use of this offense in a way that Brees has been unable to do all season. Brandin Cooks the Saints main weapon after the loss of Jimmy Graham has failed to make that much of an offensive impact. The running game has been steady however facing a tough Carolina defense (without Luke Kuechly) the New Orleans running backs will struggle to find holes and gain significant yards on the ground. At some point the game will rest on the New Orleans passing attack, when this happens it will be all up to McCown.

Brandon Weeden/Matt Cassel (Dallas Cowboys):

Matchup: At home vs Atlanta Falcons

Weeden will take over for Tony Romo after he injured his left clavicle. Weeden will be without one of the game's most prolific weapons Dez Bryant, however that might not matter. Weeden still has the best offensive line in football at his disposal and now it will be relatively obvious the Cowboys have to rely on the running game. The Cowboys will have Jason Witten on the field and will lean on Terrance Williams for a large portion of their passing attack. Weeden should have the best chance of success out of any backup in the NFL.

Jimmy Clausen (Chicago Bears)

Matchup: At Seattle Seahawks

Clausen has the worst matchup out of these three backup quarterbacks. Clausen will be facing a revamped Seattle defense with the return of their leader Kam Chancellor. Clausen will also be without one of his best weapons Alshon Jeffery this week.
