And then there were four.
Following a weekend of upsets and exciting games, four unbeaten teams remain in all of college football.
The latest BCS poll has Alabama remaining in the top spot by a considerable margin, while Kansas State became the latest team to take over the No. 2 spot after Georgia upset Florida. Notre Dame moved into the No. 3 spot after beating Oklahoma, while Oregon came in at No. 4 and LSU at No. 5.
Alabama took the first spot with a .976 average after handily defeating 11th ranked Mississippi State. The Crimson Tide improved to 8-0 on the season and continues to be the favorite in the national title game. The team has a comfortable advantage over No. 2 Kansas State, who has an average of .940.
"We certainly had a lot of respect for Mississippi State," Alabama coach Nick Saban said to the Associated Press. "You don't get to be 7-0 by accident. I think it was important for us to get off to a fast start in this game, preparing yourself to fight a 15-round fight, knowing that you're going to have to take the fight to them in the early rounds."
Alabama started food fast, taking a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. Senior quarterback AJ McCarron had a solid game, passing for over 200 yards and two touchdowns.
"You can't necessarily win the fight in the first round, but you can certainly lose it," said Saban. "I think we had the right amount of energy and the right physical energy to play in the game."
The Alabama defense shut down a high-powered Bulldogs team that was scoring over 36 points per game.
"They're No. 1 for a reason -- they don't make mistakes," Mississippi State cornerback Jonathan Banks said. "I haven't played a team like that since I've been in college. I have great respect for AJ McCarron. He doesn't make mistakes."
The Crimson Tide have another tough test next week: a rematch of last year's national title game against LSU.
Kansas State took care of business against Texas Tech and at the same time were able to take advantage of Florida's loss.
Quarterback Collin Klein continued his march towards the Heisman, scoring four touchdowns as the Wildcats beat the Red Raiders 55-24 on Saturday. The team remained undefeated in the Big 12 and now has a chance to run the table and take a spot in the national title game.
Coming into Saturday's game Klein had 1,397 yards passing and 10 touchdowns along with over 500 yards rushing and an astounding 14 touchdowns. The quarterback is responsible for 64 percent of the team's offense this year, which is the best in the country for any player.
Klein was superb again on Saturday, throwing for 233 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 83 yards and two more touchdowns. The team started off slow, but eventually pulled it together, outscoring Texas Tech 52-7. The Wildcats scored 50 points for the fifth time this year, according to the AP.
"We were playing well defensively. Offensively we hadn't figured it out yet," head coach Bill Snyder said of the shaky first half. "Sometimes you have to spar a little bit to get going."
Florida suffered the biggest loss of the weekend, as the No. 2 team fell 17-9 against 10th ranked Georgia in Jacksonville.
The win would have clinched a spot in the SEC title game for the Gators; now Florida faces tough odds at making the national championship game. The win by the Bulldogs gives them the inside track to the conference title game and a shot to face undefeated Alabama.
Quarterback Aaron Murray had a rough game, passing for 150 yards and three interceptions, but his one touchdown was enough to lead Georgia to a win.
Georgia forced six turnovers, including two interceptions from quarterback Jeff Driskel.
"I'd say we're not soft," coach Mark Richt said. "The defense rose to the occasion. ... Our seniors played well, and I know it's a game they'll remember for the rest of their lives."
Notre Dame continued its best start in a decade after defeating Oklahoma 30-13 on the road in Norman.
Landry Jones had a big game for the Sooners, passing for 356 yards, but it wasn't enough to take down the Irish. Notre Dame improved to 8-0 on the season and moved into the No. 3 spot in the BCS, giving the Irish a solid chance to make the title game should Kansas State or Alabama falter.
Quarterback Evertt Golson had only 177 yards passing, but he made up for it with a rushing touchdown with five minutes left in the fourth quarter that proved to be the game-winner. "We just wanted to come out and show them that we can."
"What we'd been hearing was a lot of people didn't think we could win this game. That kind of just added that fuel to my fire that was already burning," said Golson, who returned after sitting out last week's win against BYU because of a concussion.
Oregon and LSU rounded out the tip five, while Georgia came in at No. 6. Florida fell down to No. 7, with South Carolina, Florida State and Louisville finishing the top 10.
