The New England Patriots continue to toy with their roster as they sit undefeated on the season. Head coach Bill Belichick is always looking for ways to improve as he brings in several players for workouts heading into Week 4. With the run game operating with Dion Lewis at the moment, is New England eyeing Montee Ball to add to the rotation?
According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Patriots are bringing in Ball for a workout as he sits on the free agent market following his release from the Denver Broncos. The second-round draft pick simply got lost on the depth chart and could not emerge from a crowded roster group as he sits unclaimed through three games. The workout does not mean the Patriots are looking to sign him, but it does mean they have questions regarding their rushing attack.
Lewis has been the surprise of the season. He has emerged as a three-down back the Patriots did not realize they had. He has been starting over LeGarrette Blount who has been the change-of-pace running back for the team. In Week 2, Lewis thrived over Blount while Week 3 saw the veteran get the most carries. However, behind those two there is not much depth at the position and Ball would certainly be a quality option to add to the offense if the Patriots were concerned over injuries.
The Patriots have kicked the tires around on a few free agents. NESN.com reported Terrelle Pryor worked out along with a handful of receivers following the injuries to Brandon LaFell and Brandon Gibson. They have to make any marquee additions to the group despite the interest which could be what happens to Ball. With Tom Brady on a throwing spree right now, the Patriots can work with the players that they have at the moment.
The Patriots are doing just fine with Rob Gronkowski having 101 yards in Week 3 while Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola are doing their part. However, depth is an issue at the receiver spot as well. If the Patriots were to lose a top performer for a period of time they would be scrambling. Aaron Dobson is working to get more involved along with Scott Chandler, but they would not be enough should an injury occur. Adding insurance players is a smart move.
