The San Francisco 49ers are hoping the offensive momentum they gained against the New York Giants begins to translate into wins. If it does not, the team could be in some serious trouble as questions start to rise over the future of certain players on the roster. With Colin Kaepernick struggling to look the part of a franchise quarterback, the 49ers season is rising and falling with his abilities. That could spell disaster as mid-season trades begin to get reported.
The NFL trade deadline rarely sees any action, but this season with a few teams struggling to do much of anything, big names with expiring contracts are getting discussed. Vernon Davis is no exception. According to Bleacher Report, one name to look out for in the NFL trade machine is Davis who holds plenty of value in the league and has time expiring on his contract. The tight end has faced questions about his future in the past. Trade rumors circulated him in the offseason and with the 49ers losing, they are coming up once again.
There is no hard evidence that San Francisco is looking to deal away their trusty tight end, but if they begin to lose faith on the season that might be the best option to help rebuild. According to the Sacramento Bee, the 49ers favor giving Davis a new contract, but it is certainly no guarantee considering they made no efforts to discuss the idea in the offseason. Davis' stock is taking a hit as he has not had many chances to make plays this season. The 49ers would be wise to sell while he is still a trusted name. However, trading the tight end is really an extreme measure and likely means San Francisco is tanking the year away.
The 49ers have a better chance at winning with Davis than without him. The team showed signs of life against New York and would like to capitalize off that. Kaepernick noted that it was good to see some things fall into place, but the team needs wins now more than ever.
"It's good offensively to get in a rhythm like that," Kaepernick said, via ESPN.com. "It's something we can build off moving forward. But we have to win games. That's why we play." "To me, I have to go back out and play football. It's a game at the end of the day. It's not life or death. I go out and I go to play. I play to win and I do everything I can to try and help this team win."
The 49ers have admitted they are frustrated with the season, but no one is looking to place blame. Following the Giants game, everyone from Torrey Smith to Anquan Boldin and Carlos Hyde were quick to praise the quarterback and the way he played. If Kaepernick can keep up the consistency, trade talk around Davis and his own future will come to a halt. If not then the 49ers will need to make some decisions.
