Week 9 of the NFL will feature the last two Heisman Trophy winners going toe-to-toe as Cam Newtown and his Carolina Panthers will clash with rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III and his Washington Redskins at 1:00 p.m. ET.
They have won the past two Heisman Trophy awards as the nation's top college football player. Both Griffin and Newton were transcendent talents in college, expanding the traditional quarterback's role into a hybrid, blending speed and strength into their running while possessing a field presence that forced defenses to make special accommodations to deal with their multiple talents.
In many ways Griffin and the Redskins success this season mirrors the success of Newton and the Panthers from last season, but the luster has since been removed from the Panthers who are a dismal 1-6 this season.
The Panthers defense has been suspect all season. They were unable to put a stop to Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears on a late drive that set up the game-winning field goal, but an equal share of the blame for the loss rests with Newton.
He had two interceptions and no touchdowns on the day, and has a total of five TDs and eight picks on the season.
Meanwhile, the Redskins boast the NFL's sixth-ranked offense, and second-rated rushing attack.
They have wins against the Minnesota Vikings and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but they've come up short against the New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons.
Griffin hangs in the middle of the league in passing, with 1,778 yards and a 97.3 rating, but his legs make him a potent threat.
