La Liga Results: Barcelona Take Control of Spanish League with Record-Equaling Win as Real Remain Eight Points Behind

Barcelona continued on their merry ways in La Liga, equalling the best start ever in the league after ten games, with a 3-1 win over Celta Vigo to extend their lead over Atletico Madrid to three points.

Atletico Madrid went down 2-0 to Valencia, while Real Madrid remain eight points adrift of their bitter rivals Barca after a 4-0 victory over Real Zaragoza.

In a week, where surprisingly none of the big three - Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao - did not score, Barca took a stranglehold of the title chase with their victory over Celta.

Adriano opened the scoring for Barcelona before Baria Bermejo equalized. However, David Villa, slowly coming back to his best form, scored two minutes after Celta drew parity, starting the move before tapping home Andres Iniesta's low cross to make it 2-1.

The Spanish striker then put through Jordi Alba, who made no mistake to make it 3-1. The goal should not have stood, however, with Alba clearly offside as the ball was played in by Villa.

Barcelona now have 28 points from 10 games, equaling the record previously set by Real Madrid.

"The points that we have are more important than the record," Barca manager Tito Vilanova told reporters. "More than a record it's a sign of the desire this team has."

Real did not have it easy against Real Zaragoza, despite the 4-0 scoreline, as Ronaldo ended his eight match goalscoring streak. Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria struck two quickfire goals midway through the first half, before late strikes from Luka Modric and Michael Essien, in the team for the suspended and injured duo Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira, made it a flattering scoreline.

Mourinho was pleased with the performance of Modric and Essien. "The two who replaced them did a job that was not easy," Mourinho told reporters. "The amount of work they put in meant they were also able to score."

Real are now third in the table on 20 points after Malaga lost to Rayo Vallecano 2-1. Rayo striker Piti was the star for his side, scoring both the goals with Martin Demichelis netting for the home side.

Atletico's stellar start ended thanks to a stunning goal from Roberto Soldado in the 20th minute and a Nelson Valdez strike in stoppage time as Valencia ran out deserved 2-0 winners.
