Heading into the 2015-16 season, Langston Galloway faced some uncertainty about his future. The point guard was a breakout star last year for the Knicks and a lone bright spot in the dismal season, but that only earned him a partially-guaranteed contract for the franchise. Team president Phil Jackson questioned whether or not Galloway could capitalize off the momentum while drafting Jerian Grant. However, with the season opener around the corner, Galloway is headed nowhere.
During the preseason, head coach Derek Fisher has rotated the three-headed point guard position. However, according to Ian Begley of ESPN.com, Jose Calderon is expected to be the starter on opening night while Galloway and Grant lead the reserves. Galloway has looked very strong in the preseason, picking up right where he left off which is securing his future for the time being, but the point guard insists he still has a lot to prove to the Knicks.
"I knew it could be coming to the end at that point, so I was like, I don't know what's going to happen next," Galloway said, via the New York Post. "I was pretty much fighting for my life. That's the mindset I take into every day now. I know that my job is on that line. I have to play hard, like I have one day at this. I have a lot more confidence, just having all those games under my belt, but I still have a lot more to prove. I felt it last year, being cut, and I don't ever want to be cut again. I'm just going to continue to get better."
With Galloway staying, could another shooting threat be headed to New York? According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, the Knicks have interest in Jimmer Fredette who was released by the San Antonio Spurs. According to Bondy, it would be fun to see Fredette come off the bench, but there are not guarantees that he comes to the Big Apple. Right now, the Knicks are getting solid production from Arron Affalo, Sasha Vujacic and Wesley Saunders. There is not a real need for Fredette unless an injury creeps in. However, injuries could be what changes that. According to the New York Post, Afflalo has re-aggravated his hamstring injury and is now doubtful for the first game of the season.
For now, the Knicks are subtracting players instead of adding them as they aim to get to a regular season roster. According to the Post, Kristaps Porzingis is expected to start while Travis Trice could end up being released. Cleanthony Early is also fighting for a roster spot. Fisher has plenty of decisions to make with opening night a week away.
