The New Orleans Saints are starting to put things together after a slow and struggling start to the season. After two straight wins the offense continues to work out their issues and it is in much thanks to the run game success. With injuries at the wide receiver position, the Saints have been working the running back rotation as Mark Ingram, Khiry Robinson and CJ Spiller battle for time on the field.
It took time for Spiller to finally get involved in the Saints' offense, but he believes the more he is on the field the better the team does. On Sunday, Ingram and Robinson led the way while Spiller had 10 touches from the line scrimmage with six catches for 32 yards and four rushes for 16 yards. However, Spiller says that while the numbers might have been small, they opened the door for big games from Robinson and Ingram.
"Like I told them Saturday night, they hadn't played a backfield like us yet," Spiller said, via Nola.com. "We wanted to go out there and showcase what we were able to do, and fortunately we were able to do that. That was our first road win. That was huge. Hopefully, we just continue to get the momentum."
While Ingram and Robinson both found the endzone, Spiller was the one taking pressure of Brees as the two connected for several short passes that developed into big games. The Colts struggled with the versatility of Spiller and that is something the running back hopes continues to be part of the game plan going forward. With a big game against the New York Giants in Week 8, head coach Sean Payton will likely look to exploit the versatility of Spiller again.
"We were trying to take advantage of what they were doing," Spiller said. "Coach (Sean Payton) did a great job of doing a great game plan, calling plays and seeing what they were doing defensively. We were able to get out there and get on the edge and found some mismatches that we liked."
The return of Marques Colston certainly paid off well for Brees. The wide receiver did not record a catch until the end of the game as he was responsible for setting up the game-winning touchdown. Colston had been out with injury and the matchup against the Colts was his first pit of action. The connection between he and Brees is expected to improve. Until then, Benjamin Watson continues to be the best receiving threat for the team while Brandin Cooks is also working to improve.
