The San Diego Chargers' season continues to go from bad to worse. After falling to the Chicago Bears on Monday night, the team has two wins to their name as injuries begin to mount. Last week the Chargers lost both Branden Oliver and Keenan Allen for the season and Week 9 was no different as Malcom Floyd could be done for the year as well.
According to the San Diego Union Tribune, Floyd left Monday's game with a shoulder injury that might be severe. At 34, Floyd has already stated that this would be his final season in the league and it appears it might have come to an end much sooner than he expected. There has not been an official diagnosis on the injury, but the outlook is not positive as he left the field holding his right arm in place. With Floyd out, that leaves two receivers that the Chargers need to replace as Philip Rivers is not letting the injuries be an excuse for the record on the season.
We can make a long list of reasons, but ultimately we've had a chance to win all of these games," Rivers said, via ESPN.com. "We had a chance to beat Green Bay. We had a chance to beat Baltimore and we had a chance to win this one. And we just didn't make the plays. And there's nothing to be embarrassed about or ashamed of. We didn't do it."
The Chargers wanted to replace Allen in house, but they might need to look elsewhere for help now with Floyd hurt. Dontrelle Inman and Stevie Johnson are getting more playing time while Javontee Herndon was the quick replacement on Monday night. Inman and Johnson are good receivers, but they are simply not enough if the Chargers stand any chance of salvaging the season.
The free agent market has some talent available. The St. Louis Rams announced on Monday that they were signing Wes Welker to replace Stedman Bailey. That leaves Hakeem Nicks and Reggie Wayne as the most marquee options the Chargers could look at. Both Nicks and Wayne started the year on rosters before getting released. They have the experience and are healthy which is really what the Chargers need right now more than anything.
Danny Woodhead is trying to be the one-man show the Charges need. He was all over the field against the Bears with 33 yards rushing and another 78 receiving to lead the team. With Melvin Gordon struggling, Woodhead is trying to make up the difference. Right now it is proving to not be enough for San Diego to get by.
