The Dallas Cowboys continue to rack up the losses with Matt Cassel under center. The team is losing steam in the NFC East following losses to the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles and their season could be put on ice sooner than they expected. While many hope that Tony Romo can come in and save the day, things might be too far gone by Thanksgiving. Despite the team record, owner Jerry Jones stressed Romo will be back on the field regardless.
According to Jones, no one is interested in tanking the season whether the playoffs are in reach or not. Things were looking promising for Dallas until Romo went down with a broken collarbone that placed him on short-term injured reserve. Now, the Cowboys cannot seem to get a win and their season is in jeopardy as a result. Regardless of the record, Jones wants the quarterback on the field once he is cleared for play.
"When he gets on the field against Miami, and it most assuredly will be at this juncture, there's no set of circumstances that we wouldn't play him and play him with hopes of winning that game and winning the rest of the ballgames," Jones said, via 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. "I think not only our game but sports in general, if you've got an opportunity, if you got a chance to win this thing, then you take it. I know I'm talking in generalities, but specifically, we have a team that could really, from the standpoint of the personnel that's on the field, really be a top team as we get into the last half of this season. We want to show our fans that."
The Cowboys are on a six-game losing streak that could get worse before it gets better. The odds of them seeing the postseason seem slim, but a win over Tampa Bay on Sunday could at least help a few things considering the Giants face the Patriots. Romo continues to take part in on-field activities with the team while throwing with the scout team. He is eligible to return on No. 22 with the Cowboys hoping he is good to go by the Thanksgiving game.
Until then, Cassel must step up. He showed improvement against the Eagles as big games from Darren McFadden and Dez Bryant helped open up the playbook. He also took advantage of a breakout game from Cole Beasley who had a career-high 112 yards and two touchdowns. Cassel targeted him 11 times on Sunday and if the two can keep the momentum going, the Cowboys have a chance at saving the season for when Romo gets back on the field.
"We haven't looked at the rest of the league, but we've been doing math as far as the rest of the division," Jones said. "Your players aren't doing that. Your players are aware, but they are focused on the preparation for Tampa in this case. But certainly to the extent that we know if we won out or win a significant part of these games, we know that the same things have impacted us could impact any of these teams ahead of us."
