St. Louis Rams News: Wide Receiver Stedman Bailey Shot In Incident In Florida

Nov 25, 2015 01:18 PM EST

Stedman Bailey was shot twice in the head while he sat in his car in Miami Gardens in an apparent drive-by shooting. The Rams wide receiver was also with his cousin Antwan Reeves who was also hit by one of the bullets that passed through the car.

Along with Bailey and Reeves there were three additional passengers inside the car two of which were Bailey's children. The children escaped the incident without any physical injuries as it appears Reeves shielded them from the gun shots.

The victims drove themselves to a nearby hospital; Bailey remains in critical but stable condition. Bailey suffered non-life threating injuries but will likely undergo additional surgery on Wednesday.  Reeves is in critical condition and had to be placed into surgery immediately after his arrival. Bailey was suspended for four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy which is why he was in Florida at the time of the shooting; his hometown is Miramar, Florida.

The St. Louis Rams released this statement on the team's website, "We are aware Stedman Bailey was involved in an incident this evening. We have spoken with Stedman and he is in the hospital in critical, but stable, condition. We are gathering facts about the situation and will provide updates as we learn more."
