Florida Gators starting quarterback Jeff Driskel has a sprained right ankle and may miss the final two games of the season, including Saturday's matchup against Jacksonville State.
Driskel was hurt in last Saturday's game against Louisiana-Lafayette in the third quarter and was replaced by sophomore Jacoby Brissett, who completed 6-of-8 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown.
"We're just working through this week," Gators coach Will Muschamp said on the weekly SEC coaches' teleconference, according to ESPN.com. "Whenever you deal with an ankle it's a day-to-day process. It's a situation that continues to improve. How much it'll improve into next week, I have no idea at this time. We feel like he'll be available, but who knows?"
Driskel will not practice on Wednesday, meaning he will not be able to play on Saturday against Jacksonville State. Brissett will make his second start of the season.
"I have a lot of confidence in Jacoby, and this is his opportunity," Muschamp said. "I'm looking forward to seeing him play."
Muschamp said Driskel's injury was "day-to-day" earlier in the week and had hoped he could practice on Wednesday. The ankle didn't heal fast enough for that, leaving Brissett as the starter.
Both Brissett and Driskel played in the first game of the season for Florida, but it was Driskel who earned the starting job during the season. He started the past nine games and has passed for 1,324 yards and 10 touchdowns while completing over 64 percent of his passes. He has also been a threat in the running game, rushing for 424 yards and four touchdowns.
The sophomore has been one of the main reasons the team has been consistent all season. The past few years the Gators have dealt with issues at quarterback, but with Driskel, the team seems to be set for the next few years.
Driskel was injured on Saturday after a tackle by Louisiana-Lafayette defensive tackle Jalen Fields.
According to the Associated Press, "Brissett played in eight games last season and completed 18 of 39 passes for 206 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. He started against LSU and Auburn and played the entire second half of the Florida State game because of injuries to starter John Brantley."
Jacksonville State is one of the worst teams in the Football Championship Subdivision and should be no problem for the Gators whether Driskel or Brissett starts.
The Gamecocks are ranked near the bottom of the nation in nearly every category, including in scoring defense, rush defense, passing defense and total defense.
Florida is ranked sixth in the BCS standings and still has an outside shot at making the SEC championship game if Georgia loses in the next two weeks. Both teams are tied with 7-1 records in the SEC East division, but Georgia owns the tiebreaker after beating the Gators 17-9 on Oct. 27.
Florida has won two straight games and will finish the season at 10th ranked Florida State.
