At the start of the season the Buffalo Bills certainly had some controversy at the quarterback position. EJ Manuel was the first-round draft pick that was not playing well. Matt Cassel was the veteran at the time and Tyrod Taylor was simply an unknown. However, Taylor emerged as a real threat for the Bills and they have been riding his success ever since. With multi-year commitments to almost everyone on the roster, does Taylor stick around as well?
The Bills must decide if Taylor is the future of the franchise. The quarterback has the team at 5-6 right now. He has been inconsistent at times in his decision making. He has also dealt with a knee injury and a shoulder injury that has kept him off the field. Playing on an expiring contract, Buffalo must assess if Taylor is a long-term answer or merely a short-term fix.
"I definitely think that I can play - I definitely showed that I can play quarterback in this league," Taylor said, via the Buffalo News. "It's a work in progress. I'm always working on my craft. Never satisfied. It's up to the management. I'll just continue to approach each and every day the same way. Hard work. Attitude. Continue to keep working."
At this point, the Bills do not have anyone else on the roster that could be viewed as the starting quarterback. With big contracts out of the way, the Bills have the means to offer Taylor a nice extension and keep him off the free agent market. With the franchise appearing all but done with Manuel, bringing back Taylor is the best decision to keep the offense consistent. He has built up chemistry with Sammy Watkins along with LeSean McCoy and Karlos Williams. While he is certainly not the flashy pick, he can win Buffalo games.
"I just try to be the same person each and every day," Taylor said. "Approach work with a hungry attitude, looking to learn, not complacent at all."
The Bills are preparing to play the Houston Texans to remain in the playoff hunt. According to Mike Rodak of ESPN, Williams is not expected to be active in the matchup after injuring his shoulder. McCoy will be the lead running back along with Watkins on the sideline and the rise of Chris Hogan. The biggest need for the Bills is getting Robert Woods and Charles Clay involved more as both players have been very quiet to start the season.
