Roberto Di Matteo will look to keep pace with leaders Manchester United as he takes on his old club West Brom in Saturday's English Premier League encounter.
Chelsea could perceivably move equal on points with United if they beat West Brom, with the Red Devils set to take on Norwich in the late game, and that will be an incentive which Di Matteo will try to inspire his players with.
Chelsea have only picked up two points in their last three matches and are trying to avoid another November slump. "We tend to forget that the Manchester United game was a peculiar one," Di Matteo said. "Given all of the issues which took place in the match, I strongly believe we wouldn't have lost.
"Against Swansea we should have won the game, we should have closed it out, while against Liverpool we had plenty of chances to win it, so we're in good shape.
"We've shown our character many times, when we play well we can win games. It will be very tough against West Brom at the Hawthorns -- they have the second best home record in the league behind Manchester City, who they only lost to in added-time.
"They have good organisation with two blocks of four, they sometimes play five in midfield and are dangerous in transition and on the break.
"They have players who can score goals with (Peter) Odemwingie and (Shane) Long, (Romelu) Lukaku's also been scoring a few for them and (James) Morrison's had a good start to the season."
West Brom have been the surprise package this season, with manager Steve Clarke, who had a 12-year spell at Chelsea as player and then a coach, inspiring the Baggies to fifth place in the Premier League, just four points behind third-placed Chelsea.
"He's worked for many clubs as an assistant," Di Matteo said. "We've spoken before, he thought it was time for him to try as a manager and become a number one.
"He's chosen a good club because they allow you to work and I'm pleased for him. He's a good man, we played together, have some good memories together and it's great to see him doing well."
In injury news, Di Matteo will take a late call on Ashley Cole, but John Terry and Frank Lampard are ruled out.
West Brom will be without first-choice goalkeeper Ben Foster, who will be missing with a groin problem, while Youssouf Mulumbu is hopeful of shaking off a hamstring issue. Defender Steven Reid could be back in contention after recovering from his long-term injury.
