While Luis Suarez might be in the form of his life, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted he would be looking at striking reinforcements in January.

Liverpool have just Suarez currently as their recognized central striker, with Fabio Borini still out with an injury. Rodgers has mentioned time and again the importance of bringing in new players when the transfer window reopens with the manager now making clear what sort of reinforcements would be his priority.

"We're looking to do business in the striking department in January," Rodgers told talkSPORT. "The reality is that there was always going to be a bit of movement this season with the club trying to regain some of their money. This season was always going to be difficult.

"We'll look to do something in the January transfer window, though. There's not going to be wholesale changes in terms of players coming in, that's the reality of where the club is at.

"We're looking to grow over the next six months, we'll get some reinforcements in January and that will support the group who have been magnificent for me so far.

"Hopefully in the summer we can build again."

Liverpool have again been closely linked with a move for Arsenal forward Theo Walcott, who has left no doubts about his desire to play as a central striker.

Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher said Liverpool are capable of mounting a challenge for a place in the top four, despite lying in 11th place, but only eight points behind fourth-placed West Brom.

"We look as if we have not made a good start, but with winning on Saturday, we are not too far behind the top four," the 34-year-old told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek.

"It is still up for grabs.

"Besides the top two, and even Manchester United lost on Saturday, a lot of teams are dropping points all over the place.

"From our own point of view, we now want to kick on and make a challenge for that top four place because it seems that everyone is throwing it away."

Carragher also praised Rodgers' courage to give the youngsters a chance, with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Suso repaying the manager's faith by putting in good performances all season.

"The owners have come in and looked at it and thought they want to bring in a new manager who will promote players from the academy, which he has done," Carragher added.

"I think it does take time to settle in. It was difficult to replace players like Maxi Rodriguez and Dirk Kuyt due to the financial situation in terms of us spending a lot of money in the last few years.

"(Rodgers) has been very brave putting young players in and giving them a chance. Hopefully, we'll see the benefit of that in the future."
