The Washington Redskins and Robert Griffin III appear to be finished with each other and moving forward into 2016, teams like the Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints could be interested in RG3 at quarterback.
The Redskins have been using Kirk Cousins all season and with Cousins heading into free agency, reports have the team interested in keeping him on an extension. All of that means that RG3 is likely gone for 2016 and according to NFL.com, Ian Rapoport reports that a number of teams could be interested if Griffin becomes available. Rapoport writes that the Texans, Cowboys, Eagles and Saints could be potential landing spots, as all of those teams have some questions at quarterback moving forward.
Rapoport writes that the Redskins could look at making a trade with a team to see what they can get for Griffin, or they can look at getting out of his 2016 option. The option is guaranteed for injury only and that also likely means that even if Griffin remains in Washington, he likely will not be playing for the Redskins. All of those teams could be fits for Griffin, who showed that when healthy he can be an explosive quarterback, but over the past two years he has not been able to do that.
Rapoport writes that the Eagles make "perfect sense" based on the scheme Chip Kelly runs, while the Texans "also make sense" since Griffin is from Texas and because Bill O'Brien has a history of working with young quarterbacks. The Saints have Drew Brees getting older and could look at Griffin as a future replacement in a year or two, while the Cowboys could be in the same type of position with Tony Romo.
While all of that doesn't mean Griffin will get traded or released, Rapoport writes that teams likely will take a look at whether Griffin will be available after the way this season has gone for the Redskins. Griffin is still young and if he can stay healthy he has a chance to be a starting quarterback again.
Jay Gruden had previously shown favor to Kirk Cousins since taking over with the Redskins and his preference became abundantly clear heading into this season. Cousins has helped lead the Redskins to the cusp of a division title and he has put up solid stats, giving Gruden the justification he needs to continue to stay away from using Griffin. Griffin has not been able to stay healthy or consistent for the Redskins during his run for the team and now it looks like he will be gone in 2016.
It almost seems crazy to think that Griffin could be out of DC after this season with the way he blew up on the scene as a rookie, but injuries and inconsistency can do that to a quarterback. Dan Snyder has always loved RG3, but the results from Cousins this season has given Gruden the ammunition to stick to his guns and that likely will continue moving forward. Pro Football Talk reports that the Redskins want to lock up Cousins on a contract extension and that they will use the franchise tag on him if they can't work out a deal.
