NFL News: Jerry Jones Thinking About Backup Quarterbacks This Offseason For Dallas Cowboys?

Dec 30, 2015 01:48 PM EST

With the way the Cowboys season ended the Dallas Cowboys owner must have several ideas in mind in how to make sure there is never a repeat of the 2015 season.

The Cowboys could have locked up this division with a couple of more wins and were still in contention long after Tony Romo suffered a broken left clavicle. Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel were largely ineffective and were the main reason the Cowboys offense struggled so mightily.

It obviously is unfair to put it all on two quarterbacks who were never expected to start in the first place but forcing passes and giving the ball away was not the answer either. Now the Cowboys are faced to think about life without Tony Romo for better or worse. Jones will have plenty of options when selecting the heir to the starting quarterback position. Jones could go with a rookie quarterback fresh out of college early in the 2016 NFL draft.

In the NFL currently there are several quarterbacks who are about to come to the end of their contracts and there are plenty of options the Cowboys could bring aboard. There are young quarterbacks like Robert Griffin III, Colin Kaepernick, Geno Smith, and Johnny Manziel, all of which would be an upgrade from their current backups. RGIII could likely be signed on the cheap and if Manziel were to be released how could Jones not jump on the former first round pick.

Then there are quarterbacks such as Brock Osweiler, Kirk Cousins, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Zach Mettenberger who have all proven to be strong starters when relied upon. Cousins and Osweiler  will obviously command a ton of money as they begin to negotiate new contracts, plus there is always the assumption that none of these guys are going to want to give up a starting job and trade it in for a clip board. The Cowboys have multiple roads they can take to fortifying the quarterback position so it will be interesting to see how they approach this issue in the future.
