Consistency has yet to be a theme of the New York Knicks' season. Just as the team is coming off an ugly loss with a lack of effort and defense, they put on a crushing offensive performance against the Atlanta Hawks that saw Arron Afflalo put up 38 points while Carmelo Anthony barely found the rim. That type of play is why the Knicks are searching for roster upgrades in hopes of getting another player involved to add some consistency to the team's season. While trades are an option, the D-League is getting more attention.
Last season, the Knicks found a lot of success in the D-League. They called up Langston Galloway, Lance Thomas and Lou Amundson who all played well enough to earn returns this season. As the Knicks search for help at the guard position, could Jimmer Fredette be the next star for the team?
According to Ian Begley of ESPN.com, the Knicks are eyeing a call up of Fredette in the near future. Fredette has been playing for the Westchester Knicks averaging 23 points and 4.5 assists. He could be the answer for the Knicks if they are not ready to make a trade. According to Begley, Jackson is a big fan of Fredette who has struggled to find a home in five seasons in the NBA. He struggles with athleticism and playmaking, but he is a solid shooter and could find a role off the bench.
Begley reports that while the Knicks have shown interest in trades for players like Brandon Jennings, they are not ready to commit to something which is why calling up Fredette might be the better option. Jennings has returned to the court with the Detroit Pistons after an Achilles injury last season. Begley writes the Knicks have not been impressed with his play so far. The same can be said for Ty Lawson who is struggling with the Houston Rockets.
Calling up Fredette would give the Knicks some depth for almost no commitment. That is the favored move for the team who is not looking to add on any more salary cap burdens that extend past this season. With the injury to Cleanthony Early and struggles of Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant, a move must be made in order to help the offense. The Knicks just need to determine the best one. The inspired play of Afflalo was certainly a welcomed sight, but it remains to be seen if it can continue. Anthony made it clear that he trusts his teammates going forward, but everyone needs to put together a better effort.
"Consistency is more important," Afflalo said, via ESPN.com. "... The more I can be counted on night in and night out, I think, the better it is for the team."
