NFL News and Notes: Should the Washington Redskins Re-Sign Kirk Cousins to a New Contract In Free Agency?

Jan 08, 2016 06:09 PM EST

The Washington Redskins find themselves in the most unlikely places this postseason, the playoffs and it is all thanks to Kirk Cousins.

Cousins has been absolutely on fire this season and he has even been more effective than Aaron Rodgers. Cousins had a stellar regular season recording 4,166 passing yards, 11 interceptions, 29 touchdowns, and a 69.8 completion percentage. Cousins has been sacked 26 times this season and has only lost 3 fumbles which is less than Aaron Rodgers.

Cousins will be a free agent at the end of the season and is looking like he will be in for a huge payday from either the Redskins or a quarterback needy team. Depending on how far the Redskins get in the playoffs will absolutely impact how much Cousins gets paid. If the Redskins are eliminated in the Wild Card round Cousins should get the standard Andy Dalton style of contract but if he wins he could name his own price, at least to the Redskins.

With the Redskins about to release RGIII (likely to help pay for Cousins) they must be that this season out of Cousins is the result of hard work and that he can continue this level of play. If this is Cousins peak and the Redskins pay him whatever he desires that could have disastrous ramifications on the franchise for years to come.
