The New York Knicks have made some major improvement this season, but that may not be enough for head coach Derek Fisher to keep his job.
According to Brian Windhorst and Zach Lowe of ESPN, there is a chance that the Knicks could consider making a move with Fisher, as there has been "some rumbling" that Fisher's job may not be secure. Windhorst and Lowe spoke about the situation on an ESPN podcast, with Windhorst saying that is hasn't been "all rainbows and lollypops there" and that while it's not a "red flag" situation, it could be a "yellow flag" for the Knicks and Fisher.
Lowe said he agreed about the rumblings, although he added that he hadn't "heard them maybe like you have." The Knicks have made some clear improvement from last season, as the team is 20-21 in mid-January after only winning six games last season through this same period. Pro Basketball Talk writes that some speculated that Fisher could have been gone after the tough season last year, but that Phil Jackson gave Fisher a pass based on how the front office broke down the roster.
Marc Berman of the New York Post reported last month that some players have questioned Fisher's grasp of "Xs and Os knowledge" and that also could be a factor in the rumblings. The Knicks brought in Fisher as the head coach despite the fact that he did not have head coaching experience and it's unlikely the team will fire Fisher now with the Knicks record improved. There is a chance the team could change course and make a move before the season ends, but that seems like a step back for the franchise. Sometimes rumblings are just that, rumblings.
The Knicks are coming into the weekend with Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis both dealing with injuries. According to the New York Daily News, both Porzingis and Anthony are questionable for the game on Saturday against the Memphis Grizzlies. Anthony is dealing with an ankle injury after rolling his foot against the Celtics earlier in the week. Porzingis comes in with a shoulder injury and could sit against the Grizzlies.
