The San Francisco 49ers have a big decision to make on Colin Kaepernick as his cap hit continues to be an issue.
The 49ers signed Kaepernick in 2014 to a 6-year, $114 million contract, which means he will count $15.89 million against the cap in 2016. Next season his cap hit will move up to $19.36 million. The 49ers do have the fourth most cap space in the NFL with $44 million, but this is more about how this situation spoke to 2 different coaches. Mike Shanahan was one of the front runners for the head coaching job with the 49ers until they suddenly changed their minds.
This was due to the fact that Shanahan wanted to get rid of Kaepernick and take a quarterback with the 49ers high draft pick. Ownership believed they could salvage Kaepernick so they went with Kelly instead even though Shanahan was endorsed by Steve Young and Ronnie Lott.
Kelly likes Kaepernick and was more willing to work with him so he got the job, it was even rumored Kelly wanted to pursue Kaepernick no matter where he went. One thing is certain if Kelly wants to turn his NFL career around he can start by fixing whatever is wrong with Colin Kaepernick.
