Robert Griffin III Rumors and Targets: Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans Options If RG3 Cut By Washington Redskins?

The Washington Redskins appear to be done with Robert Griffin III and if the quarterback is released this offseason, teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans and Eagles could be potential landing spots. The Redskins are ready to commit to Kirk Cousins after Cousins led the team to the playoffs this season and that means Griffin is likely on his way out of DC.

Griffin took the team to the playoffs as a rookie and took the league by storm in 2012, but injuries and inconsistent play has derailed his development in Washington. Head coach Jay Gruden supported Griffin through the offseason, but he opted to go with Cousins as the starter in 2015 and that resulted in a surprising playoff berth. All season there has been speculation that Griffin will get released and according to Ian Rapoport at NFL.com, the Redskins are planning to cut Griffin ahead of next season.

The team picked up the $16.155 million fifth year option for Griffin last year, but Rapoport writes that the Redskins have no intention of paying that. Rapoport adds that it was owner Daniel Snyder who wanted to keep Griffin on the roster this season despite the fact that Cousins was the starter. Griffin was inactive for most of the season and did not throw a pass in 2015 and now it's likely that he will get the chance to find a new opportunity.

There are a number of teams that will be looking for a new quarterback this offseason and Griffin could be an option for those teams. Earlier in the season NFL.com reported that the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans could be potential landing spots for Griffin if he is released. Since that report some things have changed, including Chip Kelly getting fired and Hue Jackson taking over the Browns. Doug Pederson took over for Kelly and still could be interested in adding Griffin to the Eagles, while Jackson appears ready to move on from Johnny Manziel and potentially could consider looking at Griffin as an option.

After the way things went this season it's likely that Griffin will have to compete for a starting job, but there are some teams that could consider giving him the number one spot. The Texans are in the market for a QB to add some competition for Brian Hoyer, while the Cowboys want a solid backup for Tony Romo. According to Charles Robinson at Yahoo Sports, Griffin would "love" to end up with the Cowboys, as he is a Texas native and his family roots hard for the team.

It remains to be seen what will happen with Griffin, but it appears he is done in Washington with the Redskins.
