Chelsea are again keeping tabs on Andre Schurrle of Bayer Leverkusen, while Roman Abramovich considers a January move for another striker to help reduce the burden on Fernando Torres.
Schurrle was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge several times in the summer, with Chelsea also having a bid of around £15 million ($24 million) rejected by the German club.
However, Abramovch has earmarked funds for a new forward, and Schurrle fits the bill owing to his age and potential to blossom into one of the best in Europe.
While Radamel Falcao remains the No.1 target, it is believed the chances of bringing in the prolific Colombian in January are getting slimmer by the day, with the possibilities of a move at the end of the season more likely.
Since Chelsea do not have any real cover in the center-forward position -- with Daniel Sturridge is expected to leave the club in January with Liverpool the prime candidates - a striker is the Blues' highest priority in the soon-to-be-open transfer window.
While Rafa Benitez might not have much of a say in the transfer targets, his opinion has been considered, and it is believed the Spaniard has given the thumbs-up to Schurrle, who recently scored a cracking long-range goal for his club, underlining his talent.
According to the Daily Mirror, Abramovich sent out scouts to watch the German international in action recently, and is seriously considering making a bigger bid for the 22-year-old.
Schurrle is much sought after at Stamford Bridge, not only because he is talented and has a big future ahead of him, but also because he is capable of playing in several positions, particularly in the wide positions; meaning the German can fill in for Torres whenever needed, while also being available to play in just behind in the playmaking three that Chelsea like to function in.
Falcao is still a possibility, but if Chelsea are forced to wait for the Atletico Madrid striker until the summer, a quick move for Schurrle is definitely on the cards.
