The Washington Redskins are likely going to release Robert Griffin III this offseason and if that happens, the quarterback could find himself a prime target on the free agent market. Teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles all could be interested in signing the quarterback if Griffin is released.
Griffin's future with the Redskins has been up in the air all season and now it looks like the team is preparing to release the quarterback. According to NFL.com, the team plans on releasing Griffin and not paying him the $16 million option that they picked up last year for his fifth season with the team. Griffin did not have much to say when he cleaned out his locker at the end of the season and that led many to speculate that his career in Washington is done.
Head coach Jay Gruden stated Kirk Cousins this season and had Griffin inactive for most games and with Cousins hitting free agency, the Redskins are prepared to start building around him instead of Griffin. Cousins had a great season and helped lead the Redskins to the playoffs and the Washington Post reports that the team is working to sign Cousins to a long term deal. Griffin could potentially end up staying even if Cousins does sign, but that outcome is very unlikely at this point.
General manager Scot McCloughan spoke with the Washington Post about the situation and did not confirm or deny that the team was going to make a move with Griffin. McCloughan said that he plans on talking with his coaches and staff about everyone on the roster and that it's a "good thing" that the team has until March 9 to make a decision. McCloughan said that Griffin is a "good football player" and a "really good person" and that the team will evaluate all options.
The Redskins arte almost certain to release Griffin, as his $16.155-million option becomes fully guaranteed once the new league year begins on March 9. Griffin has the potential to be a starter in the league still, as he is just 25 and could compete to win the starting job with another team next season. NFL.com reported earlier in the season that the Eagles, Cowboys and Texans could be interested if Griffin becomes available.
The Browns reportedly are letting go of Johnny Manziel and could be an option, while Yahoo Sports reports that Griffin would "love" to end up with the Cowboys. Griffin remains with the Redskins for now, but it's likely that he ends up on the free agent market this offseason. Injuries and inconsistency derailed his development in Washington and now a fresh start could be just what RG3 needs.
