After a disappointing 2-1 loss to Tottenham, Liverpool will be keen to get back to winning ways in the English Premier League against a Southampton side who are unbeaten in four.
Liverpool are currently in 12th position on 16 points, while Southampton, despite picking up eight points from their previous four matches, lie third bottom on 12 points.
"It will be a tough game," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers told reporters. "(Southampton manager) Nigel (Adkins) has done a terrific job -- he's like a lot of British managers who have had to earn the right to come into the Barclays Premier League through a promotion.
"In the last few games, they have had good results. They are a team that like to play and pass and they'll come with freedom. But like the Wigan game, our expectancy and objective is to win the game.
"As a football club there's no big hooray at getting into the top half. This is a club that needs to be near the top of the league. Every step with a win is a positive step. The quicker we climb places with three points, that's our objective."
Adkins is determined to continue their good recent run. "We're respectful of all the opposition that we face, but we've got to go and play the game we want to," he told the club's official website.
"We've got eight points from the last four games so there's a bit of form about ourselves. Liverpool were unbeaten in seven or eight games before Wednesday night, and they've got a quick turnaround as well to prepare and recover in so it'll be interesting.
"Everyone's got a smile on their face and a spring in their step. The lads who haven't played have had their training session, so everyone is raring to go for the weekend's game."
Liverpool will welcome back Lucas Leiva from three months on the sidelines, while Joe Cole is available again after overcoming his knock which kept him out of the game against Tottenham.
