Barcelona will look to go 14 points clear of Real Madrid when they take on Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish La Liga.
The Catalan giants have been unstoppable this term, and look like they are headed towards another La Liga title.
"I wouldn't give them (Real Madrid) up for dead," Vilanova told reporters. "We are talking about maybe being 14 points ahead (of Real) after tomorrow (Saturday) but maybe we'll end the weekend only eight in front.
"It's not normal that we win all our matches. We should prepare ourselves for when we lose."
Barca manager Tito Vilanova, however, knows a win against Bilbao is not going to be easy, even if they are playing in the Camp Nou.
"I don't think they want revenge," Vilanova added. "Like most teams they just want to win against Barcelona. When we play football we all want to win. It will be a difficult game because of the way Athletic plays.
"We know that as soon as one of our players receives the ball he won't have time to think and look, because Athletic are a very intense team. They turn everything into a one-to-one duel. They don't give you time. This makes it a very attractive game for the public because the game is very intense and fast. There is no time for anything, everything moves very fast.
"At the beginning of the season I was thinking of having a good start of the season, doing things right. I was focused on the players getting used to seeing me as their head coach. But I wasn't thinking about the points between Barcelona and Real Madrid, we could be behind or ahead of them.
"I rather think game by game. For me the most important thing is to focus on tomorrow's game which will be very difficult, anything beyond that is out of our possibilities to think about it."
Dani Alves and Alexis Sanchez are definitely ruled out for Barca, while Adriano is a doubt through illness.
For Bilbao, Carlos Gurpegui will miss the game against Barca, but Aritz Aduriz returns from suspension.
