New York Giants News: Geoff Schwartz and Will Beatty Released This Offseason

Feb 10, 2016 02:47 PM EST

The New York Giants have announced today that they have released two offensive linemen in Geoff Schwartz and Will Beatty.

The moves will save the Giants over $7.1 million in cap space. Beatty had been overpaid and overhyped for entirely too long; he had missed the entire 2015 season thanks to a torn pectoral. He also injured his rotator cuff and required surgery to have it repaired.

With Beatty turning 31 the Giants thought that this was a great time to move on from the offensive lineman however they will now depend on Ereck Flowers to help block for Elis blind side.

Schwartz on the other hand signed a $16.8 million dollar deal ahead of the 2014 season on only ended up playing in 13 of 32 games and ended up on injured reserve several times throughout the past couple of seasons. Schwartz was expected to help solidify this offensive line however his absence for so many games helped destabilize the depth on the O line.

It is clear the Giants are trying to get rid of some of the dead weight they have on this roster and make a couple of offers to some bigger, much more consistent free agents. The Giants will have a lot of work to do if they hope to compete for the NFC East crown next season.
