The New York Yankees don't know how much time Alex Rodriguez will be out, but they will need help at third base and Kevin Youkilis is a rumored target.
"Eh, why would we want another old guy?"
I can hear Yankee fans already, but think about it, who knows the American League East better?
Youkilis spent his first nine years in Boston playing for the Red Sox before getting traded to the Chicago White Sox way before the trade deadline of the 2012 season.
Alex Rodriguez has given the Yankees an average of 17 homers about 59 RBI in 2011 and 2012.
Youkilis is also at that stage in his career. He hit 19 homers an drove in 60 RBI combined in Boston and Chicago during the 2012 season.
The Red Sox got rid of him because Will Middlebrooks was playing well. He is young so the Red Sox saw Youkilis as a dispensable piece.
Though he only hit .235 this past season, Youkilis has a knack for getting on base. He had an on-base percentage of .336. Youkilis was Billy Beane's obsession years ago as he sought after products who got on base.
The Yankees know Youkilis is not worth the $13 million as the White Sox declined to pick up his option. So how about a one-year deal for the bearded fellow?
A-Rod's injury recuperation is somewhere between 4-6 months. If the math is right he will be back by June, but it will probably take him some time to get back into full swing.
Of course, Youkilis is injury prone, so maybe like a $6 million deal with incentives, just so they can protect themselves from Youkilis' back.
Youkilis will turn a lot of solo shots into two and three-run blasts. It will be interesting to see if the Yankees make a move or if they stick the unstable Eduardo Nunez at third instead.
