As the Los Angeles Lakers continue to work the kinks out in their new offense under Mike D'Anotni, they'll have to continue to do so without veteran point guard Steve Nash for a little longer than expected.
In a brief interview after their 113-103 loss to the Orlando Magic, Nash said the non-displaced fracture in his left leg hasn't healed enough for him to play in at least the Lakers' three-game trips this week.
"Another 10 days to two weeks?" Nash wondered aloud. "That's a total guess. Since I can't run, I'm not going to play this week."
Nash has already missed 15 games this season, his longest span since 1999. He plans to fly with the team to receive further treatment but he's not currently planned to take another MRI.
"When he feels secure physically -- whether he's playing well (in practice) or not -- I think he'll come back," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said of Nash. "He just wants to make sure he doesn't reinjure anything. I've known him forever, and he's always playing at a high level. His mental ability to be able to pass the ball and stuff. ... He might not be at what he thinks is a high level, but it will be high for us."
Nash has participated in various agility and jogging drills in the past week, and shot jumpers during pregame warmups.
"The recovery time is getting better," Nash said. "But it's a small improvement."
