A struggling Chelsea squad heads into the Stadium of Light as they face off against Sunderland at 10 a.m. ET/3 p.m. ET.
On paper, this should be the Blues' match. They are the third place team in the English Premier League standings racking up 26 points in 15 matches. Sunderland is at the cusp of entering the bottom three teams sent as they sit just one point in front of Southampton from the pit with 13 points won.
However, Chelsea doesn't remember the last time their soccer team won them a soccer game. The Blues haven't won a game since October 20 when they defeated Tottenham 4-2.
The Blues lost last week against West Ham in a surprising 3-1 defeat. Their previous five matches concluded in draws or losses. They had consecutive scoreless draws versus Fulham and Manchester City. They lost to West Brom 2-1 after having consecutive 1-1 draws with Liverpool and Swansea.
Sunderland has tastes victory more recently after defeating Fulham 2-1 on November 18. That was their last victory.
Since then, they dropped a match against West Brom 4-2, had a draw 0-0 versus QPR and last week lost to Norwich 2-1.
Chelsea needs to build momentum with a win today. They are trailing the first place Manchester United by seven points and three points behind Manchester City.
One of those two teams will lose or possibly both will gain one point. It will be the perfect opportunity for Chelsea to gain some ground in the Barclays standings.
