With the Boston Red Sox in search for pitching security, the ball club appears to have slight interest in bring Javier Vazquez out of retirement.
Vazquez retired following the 2011 season but is currently prepping to pitch for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. According to WEEI's Rob Bradford, the Red Sox will send out scouts to watch Vazquez pitch in Puerto Rican Winter League on Friday.
When Vazquez, 36, last pitched in 2011, the right-hander pitched 192 2/3 innings for the then-Florida Marlins, improving his stats from a disastrous previous season in 2010 with the New York Yankees.
During his return with the Yankees, Vazquez lost some heat behind his four-seam fastball and lost his effectiveness, posting a 5.53 FIP while allowing 8.9 H/9, 3.7 BB/9, and striking out just 6.9 batters per nine innings. However, as a Marlin, Vazquez saw resurgence in his fastball speed as it nearly bounced back to its normal 92-mph plateau.
As of today Vazquez's fastball is being clocked at 92-93 mph, which is reminscent to his best velocity ratings of 2008 as a member of the Chicago White Sox.
Though there is much in interest in what Vazquez can contribute to the team, he has shown full commitment into returning to the major-league.
