NFL Rookie of the Year Award: Russell Wilson Is The Rookie Most Deserving Of The Award (Commentary)

With the NFL playoffs set to begin this weekend, one may look back this season as to be the "Year of the Rookies" as we've witnessed some sensational veteran-like play from some of the league's fresh new faces.

The five finalists for the Pepsi Max NFL Rookie of the Year award have been announced and to no surprise it is highly dominated by offensive players. Three rookie quarterback sensations, however, have generated the most noise this season.

Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins, Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks and Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts.

All three have taken ownership and leadership to their perspective teams and with all three in action on wild card weekend, fans will be anxiously waiting to see who among the three will lead their team and continue playing at the high level they displayed all season long.

With the season these three had it's not doubt that they're the frontrunners in the rookie of the year debate, but even though all deserve to win, there can only be one.

Out of the three Luck led the way in passing yards with 4,374, Wilson led with the most touchdowns at 26 and RGIII led with the highest QB rating at 102.4 and only five interceptions.

Though all were very impressive, Wilson is the one who deserves the award.

Wilson had a fantastic year with the Seahawks to the surprise of many. Coming in out of Wisconsin, Wilson was expected to begin his first season in the league on the bench, especially since the Seahawks signed free agent Matt Flynn from the Green Bay Packers.

Instead Wilson's number was called as starter and since then he's been a marvel to watch, and he did it relatively under the radar in comparison to Luck and RGIII.

Wilson complemented his 26 touchdown passes with 3,118 yards thrown, ten interceptions thrown and a QB rating of 100.0.

Those are solid impressive numbers for the young rookie.

Wilson gives you a mixture of both Luck and RGIII, in the sense of his accuracy and his ability to extend a play. His ability to throw the deep ball on the run is something to marvel at in itself being that there's only a handful of quarterbacks who can throw an accurate pass on the run with so much precision.

Though he'll probably lose out to RGIII, who appears to be favorite to take the trophy home, Wilson performed admirably in a season that he wasn't technically supposed to have.
