Carmelo Anthony was fasting for 15 days, but that ended together with a New York Knicks defeat of the New Orleans Hornets on Sunday.
He said he was fasting for "spiritual reasons."
"I usually do it sometimes just to get some clarity in my life," Anthony says. "Spiritual reasons. I'm done now. I can't do it no more."
Whether a direct result of Anthony pleasing his spiritual needs, the Knicks were struggling during that stretch.
Anthony told Newsday, "It's a long story. I haven't had a good meal in about two-and-a-half weeks. No meats, no carbs, anything like that. I don't know how I was going through competing at a high level. Just sometimes these past three, four games where the body just feels depleted out there and just trying to find a way to get energy. But like I said, I surrender. I'm done. I'm going to get some food right now."
Yesterday, Anthony dropped 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 100-87 victory over the Hornets. It snapped a three-game losing streak and kept the Knicks two games up on the red hot Brooklyn Nets.
In the month of January, the Knicks are 3-4, which might explain a lot. The team has struggled in the new year and, aside from injuries, Anthony's diet could have played a part in how the team performed. He had no energy and there's no way you can keep up with NBA stars on an empty stomach.
So far, the Knicks are giving their fans a reason to watch their games. However, as of late, the team has been struggling. After starting the month of December 7-1, the Knicks have gone on to post a 6-8 record in their last 14 games.
It has been a frustrating time for the Knicks and especially Anthony who recently hit the tabloid and gossip headlines for having issues with Kevin Garnett after supposedly the Boston Celtics' big man said La La Vasquez tastes like "Honey Nut Cheerios."
Anthony became so frustrated he wanted to have a word with Garnett after the game and many thought the worst of the situation. Security expected things to become physical and they were there to prevent any damage.
Many analysts say they have never seen Anthony that frustrated. It could have been due to how personal Garnett's were or maybe because he was extremely hunger and Garnett's comments rubbed off the wrong way.
Now the Knicks look to build on that win and Anthony doesn't have to worry playing on an empty stoamch.
