The Los Angeles Lakers finally won their first game in 2013 with a 113-93 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, snapping a disappointing six-game losing streak.
After the desperately needed win, Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant spoke with the media and discussed what the team needs to do in order to make the next step. Arash Markazi of ESPN Los Angeles tweeted that Bryant wants the Lakers players to put their egos aside and work for the betterment for the team.
It's Bryant's hopes that the team's latest win will get the Lakers back on track, but with an injury plagued season continuing to be the black cloud over their heads, the chances of making the playoffs continue to look out of reach with each loss.
The Lakers already have a depleted frontcourt without Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol dealing with injuries, the absence of Jordan Hill is only making life harder. Hill gave the Lakers instant offense off the bench, and with the Lakers possibly not having his presence on the court this season, the Los Angeles Times is reporting that the team has until Tuesday to file a disabled players exception, something that will allow them to pursue a replacement for Hill.
According to the Larry Coon's NBA Salary Cap FAQ, the Lakers can apply for an exception worth half of Hill's $3.56-million salary. There's no guarantee the league will approve the exception if the Lakers even apply for it, but if granted, the Lakers would gain about $1.78 million in additional spending power.
