The Los Angeles Lakers will be without power forward Jordan Hill for the remainder of the season due to his hip injury, only adding more damage to the team's already sinking ship of a season.
Hill will soon undergo surgery to remove loose bodies and repair a possibly torn labrum in the hip, with a recovery time expected to last at least six months the minimum.
With Hill gone, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak has sent a request to the NBA for a disabled player exception. If granted, the Lakers would gain an additional $1.78 million is spending power to sign a player for the remainder of the season.
It can also be used in trade to acquire a player in his final year of his contract, making up to $1.88 million to spend.
The deadline for any team to file for a disabled player exception was Tuesday, but Kupchak said he wasn't sure when he would hear back from the league but he doesn't expect it to be much more than a week.
The Lakers will likely go after another big man in hopes that he can fill the void left by Hill. Los Angeles relied on Hill to bring in instant offense from the bench and he provided the team with much needed defense and intensity.
Before the injury this season, Hill averaged 6.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
