The "biggest boss" in hip-hop today, Rick Ross, was the apparent target of a drive-by-shooting in Fort Lauderdale early Monday morning.
Ross, born William Roberts, was in a 2011 Rolls Royce driving eastbound on Las Olas Boulevard when a gunman approached the car and opened fire around 5 a.m.
Moments after the shooting, Ross' vehicle struck the wall of an apartment complex after the driver turned the corner to escape the bullets.
Authorities confirmed that neither Ross, 37, whose real name is William L. Roberts, nor his passenger Shateria L. Moragne-el, 28, was injured. Initially Ross and his companion were not named because they were "fearful for their lives," police said.
Ross, a Miami native, lives in nearby Davie. Detectives are urging anyone with information regarding this shooting to contact FLPD's Violent Crimes at 954-828-5546.
Ross, also known as the Teflon Don, the name of his hit 2010 album, has been one of the formative voices in the development of the Miami rap sound since his 2006 album on Slip-N-Slide Records, "Port of Miami," debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
He's collaborated with various artist, from T-Pain, Nelly and R. Kelly on his "Port of Miami" album, to Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and Kanye West on his 2012 release, "God Forgives, I Don't."
Ross has been equally influential as a producer, and his Maybach Music Group label has a roster of acts that frequently sprinkle the Billboard charts, including Meek Mill, Wale and Omarion.
